Archive for March, 2008

So, a couple of weeks ago I was diagnosed with diabetes. I went from “my life is over” to “this sucks” to “this diet is retarded” and, after tonight, to “OK”. I went grocery shopping the other day (which, by the way, is expensive when you have to buy only from the OUTSIDE of the market). Today I invited my brother and his family over for dinner. If I do say so myself it was YUMMY. And, to make it even better, every I made was 100% diet approved (my doctor’s diet, not my modified “this diet is retarded diet”).

So, in case you’re wondering here’s what we had Baked Chicken Strips with Mustard, Almond, and Parmesan with Roasted Asparagus and Garlic and Salad with Red & Orange Bell Peppers and Litehouse Organic Caesar Dressing.  All I can say is YUM!  And, it was all super easy.

My other hit meal this week:  Egg Muffins.   I made a batch (they are definitely best straight from the oven) and refrigerated the rest.  They are pretty good reheated.

I know I’ll be making all these recipes again.  In fact, I might go get some more asparagus for this week.

So, since I’ve been forced to get my blood sugar under control, I might have a small advantage.  As my sister said “you’ll be the skinny one in the family soon”.  That might be a great result of this bad news.

So, I went to Orange County for the weekend.  I left Friday, the day AFTER the first day of Spring.  I got up at 7AM to leave the house by 8AM for my 10AM flight.  It was supposed to be in the mid-high 70’s the whole time I was down south so I decided I would wear “summer” clothes.  I didn’t want to push it too far so I settled for capris, tshirts and sandals.  I left Friday morning wearing a light tshirt, a pair of denim capris and a pair of summer slip-ons.  It was cold when I left with a few small flakes falling to join the inch of snow we’d gotten the night before.  Warm I wasn’t, but I was going to see the sun so I sucked it up and got in the car.  (Yes, I turned the heater on.)

I stopped for coffee which was fine, since I went through the drive-thru except that the snow was coming in sideways.  Then I started on the long drive to the airport.  When I left the temperature was a comfortable (said with a snort and an eye-roll) 33.

After I passed into Washington the snow started coming down harder and the temperature steadily dropped.  By the time I got to the airport it was near blizzard conditions and a ridiculous 28 degrees.  (I say ridiculous because it was officially SPRING.)

So, then I had to park.  I missed the driveway to the parking lot close to my terminal so I went to the outside garage lot.  Of course it was almost full so I had to park in the last row.  Which meant I had to walk through that lot and through the garage before getting to the terminal where I could warm up.

But, you know what?  It was all worth it.  Because when we landed in Ontario, CA it was a beautiful 80 degrees outside.  Beautiful and oh so welcome.  I was so glad I’d faced the blizzard in my summer clothes.

I spent the weekend outside as much as possible.  I swam in a super comfortable pool.  I got a little sunburn (oops) that was actually not completely unwelcomed.

I DEFROSTED!  I’m not back from the beautiful 80-95 degree weather.  There’s no more snow on the ground.  It’s actually been decent…mid-40’s.  I wasn’t too uncomfortable when I landed and spent the late afternoon/evening in my summer clothes.

Spring WILL really be here someday.  And before you know it I’ll have the air conditioning running and be complaining about the heat.

It’s been a rough year for me.  I cut back a lot on work the end of last year to help my dad and sister following their surgeries.  I got by but just barely and was waiting for this year to get caught up again.  January was great, I was getting things done like I’d planned and everything was going great.

Then February hit.

I got sick and I couldn’t get over it.  I literally spent the better part of four weeks miserable.  I wasn’t able to work much and it’s really hurting right now.  Not to mention the fact that I have a TON of stuff to get caught up on.  Talk about stress.

Then last week I had to go to a follow-up appointment and got some unexpected and very unwelcome news.  It’s not the end of the world and after I got over the shock of hearing what the doctor said I’m going to hit this head-on and conquer it.  But, still that threw me for a loop for a few days.

I swear, 2008 was supposed to be a good year.  Unfortunately it hasn’t proven to be so yet.

Oh well….I know it’ll go up from here.  I’m convinced of it!

to me.  :)

Yeah, so my birthday was Monday.  Another year older and a lot wiser.  Ha!  Anyway, I love my birthday.  If I could celebrate the entire month of March, I would.  So, wanna know how I spent my birthday this year?

I woke up, took a shower then crashed on the couch because I was too exhausted from the shower to do anything else.  I finally got dressed just in time for my brother and his family to pick me up to take me to dinner.  WooHoo.  The dinner was nice, but honestly, I felt like crap.  We came back to my place for our dessert and they hung out for a while then I went back to sleep.

It seems I’m still not over the dang flu I got mid-February.  But, I finally sucked it up and went to the doctor.  Yes, I had that full blown, real flu.  It’s now turned into bronchitis.  Luckily I got in before it turned to pneumonia.  So, I’m on antibiotics and have some cough pearls (I can’t take cough syrup so I’m limited on what they can give me to help the cough).

I actually was able to work a bit today.   Now, though, I’m exhausted.  I think I need to take a nap.

I figure what’s one more day if it means I’ll feel better.  Right?

So, Happy Birthday to me….even if my birthday did suck.
